Red Sox take close one from Yankees

The Boston Red Sox got a tough win over the New York Yankees yesterday at New Yankee Stadium with the Red Sox picking up the W 2 to 1. Wow! What a nail biter! This was a pitchers duel that Jon Lester and Phil Hughes will never forget! Fans with Yankee baseball tickets saw two fantastic pitchers do battle. Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester (2.94 ERA) got the win, while Phil Hughes (3.92 ERA) took the loss for the Yankees. Jon Lester went 6.1 solid innings for the Red Sox, allowed 4 hits, no home runs and no earned runs with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Red Sox was Daniel Bard (1.90). The Yankees’s starter Phil Hughes went 6 innings, allowed 6 hits, no home runs and 2 earned runs with one walk and 3 strikeouts. Kerry Wood (5.55), Boone Logan (3.00), and Joba Chamberlain (5.07) also pitched for the Yankees. With the win, Lester’s record goes to 12-7, while Hughes is at 13-5. Jonathan Papelbon earned the save for the Red Sox, bringing his saves up to 28.

In addition to the 2 runs, the Red Sox scored 6 hits and committed no errors. It wasn’t a huge day for anyone at the plate for the Red Sox, as nobody managed more than 2 hits. Victor Martinez had a tough day at the plate, leaving 5 runners on base. The Yankees didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. Nick Swisher could not get much going at the plate as he left 7 runners on base. The Yankees managed one run, 6 hits and one error.

Umpiring duties were performed by Hunter Wendelstedt, Bruce Dreckman, Jerry Layne and Mike Winters. There were 49,476 Yankees ticket holders in attendance at New Yankee Stadium.
