The New York Yankees faced off against the Oakland Athletics yesterday at New Yankee Stadium with the Yankees securing the victory 9 to 3. Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes (4.10 ERA) got the win, while Vin Mazzaro (4.05 ERA) took the loss for the Athletics. Phil Hughes went 5 innings for the Yankees, allowed 4 hits, no home runs and 2 earned runs with 5 walks and one strikeout. Also pitching for the Yankees was Chad Gaudin (5.34), and David Robertson (4.05). The Athletics’s starter Vin Mazzaro went 3.2 innings, allowed 7 hits, 3 home runs and 7 earned runs with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Boof Bonser (4.73) also pitched for the Athletics. With the win, Hughes’s record goes to 16-6, while Mazzaro drops to 6-7.
In addition to the 9 runs, the Yankees put up 9 hits and committed no errors. It wasn’t a huge day for anyone at the plate for the Yankees, as nobody managed more than 2 hits. Marcus Thames had a tough day at the plate, leaving 4 runners on base. The Athletics didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. Jeff Larish could not get much going at the plate as he left 4 runners on base. The Athletics got 3 runs, 6 hits and one error.
Umpiring duties were performed by Doug Eddings, Dana DeMuth, C.B. Bucknor and Kerwin Danley. There were 44,575 Yankees ticket holders in attendance at New Yankee Stadium.
